Organic Food or Natural Food: What’s the Difference?

We are lucky to live in this day and age where healthy food products are easily available. Since most people nowadays aspire to live a healthy lifestyle, there has been a huge demand for these products. And in an effort to meet this demand, we now see a large influx of health food products sold everywhere, whether at brick-and-mortar stores or health food stores online.

With the swell of available products though, sometimes consumers can get confused and the choices can become overwhelming.

One choice that often confuses some consumers is the choice between organic food and natural food. These two terms often get interchanged and most people think that they are one and the same. But this couldn’t be farther from the truth.

The Difference between the Two

When you say natural food, these are food that are closer to their natural state compared to other versions of the same food. This generally means that they have not been processed and have not been chemically altered or synthesized. An example would be a freshly picked tomato, which is a natural food, compared to canned tomatoes, which is not. Any manufacturer though can easily label their product as ‘natural’ as this is not heavily regulated and lacks adequate guidelines. So there’s a risk that although a product contains heavily processed ingredients, it can still be labelled as ‘natural.’

Organic food on the other hand are food that have been produced without the aid of chemical pesticides, toxic herbicides and artificial fertilisers. These have not undergone genetic modification and have not been treated with hormones, antibiotics, preservatives or synthetic additives. Unlike natural food, organic food is heavily regulated. It is even considered as the most heavily regulated food system. When a product is labelled as organic, this means that this is backed up by government assurance that it was really produced without the use of chemicals, antibiotics and hormones.

Which is the Better Choice

So the question now is, which is the healthier option? Many claim that organic food is healthier and safer to eat than natural food. While many still doubt the truth behind these claims, there are a few studies that back them up. One example is a study made on organic milk, which showed that it had more vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants compared to non-organic milk. Another study also showed that tomatoes that were organically grown displayed higher levels of antioxidants. With the absence of pesticides in organic food, this also prevents the ingestion of organophosphorus, a powerful chemical found in some pesticides that has been said to cause some developmental problems like ADHD. So eating organic food would lessen the amount of this chemical entering our body and lessen the risk of developing these conditions.
