Frequently Asked Questions
Can’t we get enough Omega 3 from the foods we eat?
Generally, no. Many researchers believe that the majority of Omega-3 food sources have disappeared from the modern diet. The foods that are now considered "mainstream" are often deficient in Omega-3. Even if your diet includes several meals of fish per week, you may not be ingesting sufficient amounts of Omega-3. This is because much of the fish we consume is now farm raised or does not contain significant amounts of Omega-3. Ideally, your diet should supply at least 650 mg of long chain Omega-3 (DHA + EPA) per day, either from food sources or dietary supplementation. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in cold deep water fish, such as salmon, tuna, mackerel anchovies and sardines.
Can fish oil help my child?
It has been demonstrated that access to essential polyunsaturated fatty acids early in life is important for intellectual development during the first years, and that it can also have an impact on IQ, school abilities and academic performance up to the age of 18.
Children with behavioural problems are more likely to show symptoms of low omega-3 levels (e.g. dry skin, dry hair, excessive thirst) and have lower levels of omega-3 in their blood than children without behavioural problems. There is some evidence that increasing omega-3 levels reduces the severity of Attention and behaviour problems, such as inattention, in some children.
Some children with reading difficulties have shown major improvement in their reading after taking fish oil. Children should increase their intake of fish omega-3 fatty acids by eating more fatty fish like salmon, trout, mackerel, tuna, sardines, and anchovies. An omega-3 food supplement for children is an option for children who do not like fish or who do not get enough in their diet. For normal development of intellectual capacity, vision and skills, a combination of the omega-3 fatty acids should be taken.
How is the fish oil processed?
Fish oils are processed using state of the art refrigeration and preservation methods. The fresh fish are rapidly processed to remove the body oils by steam distillation and further processed by vacuum separation of the low boiling toxins and filtration to provide a standard uniformity of 18% EPA and 12% DHA. Melrose Omega-3 Kid’s Fish Oil is derived from small fish such as sardines and anchovies. Fish Oil has higher concentrations of EPA and DHA than Cod Liver Oil. Unlike Cod Liver Oil, Fish Oil is obtained from the body of the fish, excluding the liver.
Has it been checked for contaminants?
Because the sea is the eventual recipient of toxins, it is necessary to do routine tests. Modern processing methods and the processing of smaller fish have kept both mercury and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) at less than 0.2ppm.
Are there any side-effects to taking fish oil?
Currently, there are no reported side-effects. However, you should always read the product label carefully and completely.
The product has gone cloudy in the fridge, Why?
Melrose produces a range of Omega-3 oils that are kept refrigerated or refrigerated after opening:
- Flaxseed Oil (>52% Omega-3)
- 18/12 Fish Oil (30% Omega-3)
- Cod Liver Oil (20% Omega-3) also contains Vitamin A and D
All oils are composed of Omega-3 (linolenic), Omega-6 (linoleic), and Omega-9 (Oleic) fats, as well as an amount of saturated fat.
- Flaxseed Oil contains 9% saturated fat.
- 18/12 Fish Oil contains 31% saturated fat.
- Cod Liver Oil contains 14% saturated fat.
When the oil is refrigerated to very low temperatures for long periods, this saturated fat portion tends to form white sediment on the bottom or white lumps on walls of the bottle. It can also appear as cloudiness. This is natural.
Melrose recommends that you lightly shake the bottle each time you dispense a serve or dose. This keeps the oil fractions mixed. Otherwise the saturated fats concentrate at the bottom.
The sediments mentioned will disappear if the oil is brought to room temperature. This test will not harm the oil as 2-3 days at room temperature has no effect on the oil. Keeping the oil at room temperature for longer is not recommended.
