Don't put up with the Discomfort of Insect Bites

Usually insect bites cause stinging pain or discomfort to humans. It is very common that insect bites and stings cause minor annoyance and irritation. Commonly insect bites and stings cause mild pain resulting in itching, redness or minor swelling of skin. However, sometimes painful wounds and allergic reactions are caused by the pierce of an insect's stinger into skin. On the other hand, insects like mosquitoes bite for their food. Mosquitoes do not bite to defend themselves; they bite humans to get blood. Mosquito bites cause diseases when they carry pathogens. Mosquitoes are vectors for malaria and dengue. Relapsing fever, caused by a bacteria called spirochetes is transmitted by the bites of infected lice.

Preventive Measures

Insect repellents should be used to protect oneself from insect bites and stings. Vector mosquitoes are very dangerous and active during evenings, so it is recommended to avoid being exposed to mosquitoes during evenings. Skin should be covered to avoid being stung while going to hiking or taking part in camping.

There is a risk of being affected with diseases from insect bites in certain places. It is highly important to be aware of risks of exposure before going to such areas.

Remedies for Insect Bites and Stings

Depending upon the reaction to the bite or sting, treatment is done. Mild pain and redness can be treated by cleaning with soap and application of cold water. Refrain from itching and scratching the bite area to prevent infections. Usage of lotions like calamine can relieve itching sensations.

It is highly recommended to consult physicians or health care providers to treat insect bites that transmit pathogens causing severe health problems. Proper medications and vaccinations should be taken to avoid the risk of getting diseased.
